TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Tiama heartwood is pink-brown to uniformly red, discolouring to dark red-brown. The 100 mm thick sapwood is grey-white to light pink, sometimes with a transitional zone with the heartwood. Medium texture, grain interlocked.

Moderate durability, very resistant to fungi and insects.

 

DRYING

Drying requires care in presence of highly interlocked grain in order to avoid distortions.

 

SPECIFIC WEIGHT

With a moisture content of 12%, the specific weight with an average of 650 kg per cubic meter.

 

PRINCIPAL USES AND PROCESSING TECHNIQUES

In planing, if the grain is highly interlocked, a 15  cutting angle is necessary to avoid tearing. Tends to burn in mortising.
